Royal Berkshire Sporting Agency- Focus on Pheasant
Focus On Pheasant
It is fair to say that Pheasant shooting has shaped the countryside. Travel the length and breadth of the country and you will see areas of woodland that exist having been planted because of shooting. Whilst not a native species (conventional wisdom says the Romans introduced them), Pheasants are capable of thriving in habitats where Partridges struggle. Pheasants are strong flyers and the speed and height which they can reach, with little effort, is what makes them so challenging.
No matter how they are presented, Pheasant shooting, with the season starting on 1st October, is hugely enjoyable and The Royal Berkshire Sporting Agency are able to host days to suit all preferences.
Key Facts
A Pheasant can fly at up to 40 mph and even faster in the wind.
Often Hen Pheasants are as much as 1 pound lighter than a Cock Pheasant.
Pheasant is one of the most versatile game meats available. Fancy trying your hand at cooking pheasant this season, visit the British Game Alliance website for lots of tasty recipes. https://www.eatwild.co/recipes/
Our Top Pheasant Shooting Tips
When shooting Pheasant pay close attention to their line. Often you will see a bird appear, having been flushed some distance away from the line, with its wings ‘set’ and it will be gliding. Two things to bear in mind, it will not be as slow as it looks and it is very easy for a Pheasant to ‘slide’ left or right when gliding. So be sure to use your front hand and muzzle to establish and maintain the line before swinging through to create your lead.
Be sure to have the right cartridges as a later season bird flying at greater height will require a different load to a September partridge.
The Royal Berkshire Gun Room stock the perfect cartridges for the job.... Hull High Pheasant Extreme.
