James Aiken travels the world in pursuit of adventure, drawn to the wildest landscapes and expanses of nature. From hiking in the Highlands to sailing the Atlantic, having the right gear is essential to his whole experience. On his latest trip to Norway, he put Purdey kit to the test, through dense forests and across frozen plains, in the most extreme weather conditions.
“There’s something otherworldly about winter in Norway,” Aiken tells us, setting the scene for the magic he seeks to find in every country he visits. “The air is crisp, the landscape blanketed in pristine snow that glistens under the soft, pink hues of the low sun. This is no ordinary place for me, Norway is a country that stirs my soul.”

It’s a place he’s been exploring for years now. “I have a long history with this land of endless beauty, a connection woven through countless journeys and memories. Every visit rekindles a deep sense of belonging, as if the wild, untamed nature reflects something fundamental and pure. On this trip, every step — whether through dense, snow-laden forests or across frozen, shimmering tundra — feels like a rediscovery of nature’s raw and breathtaking beauty.”

For cold-weather trips, Aiken’s top tip is to always pack layers. He particularly looks for breathability and insulation, pieces that feel luxurious and easy to wear (in extreme surroundings, it’s the little luxuries that really count) and perform incredibly well. There’s no room for error, the right kit can make or break the whole trip. “Experiencing Norway's winter wonder requires more than appreciation for its beauty; it demands thoughtful preparation, particularly in how you dress. Against biting winds and sub-zero temperatures, a proper layering system becomes your shield. Purdey winter gear proved indispensable on this journey.”

Reporting back, Aiken recommended his essential technical layering pieces from the Purdey collection. His highlights include the Merino Lux Half Zip Sporting Fleece: “A luxuriously crafted mid-layer, adding essential insulation while remaining lightweight and flexible.” And the Gloucestershire Lightweight Jacket: “The outer layer — a technical yet classically designed shell — providing the perfect protection from wind and snow.” He adds that “a base layer of breathable, moisture-wicking merino to ensure warmth without overheating during hikes and adventures”, like this Tartan Flannel Shirt, is another of his non-negotiables.
“Purdey pieces aren’t just functional; they embody the sophistication of the explorer, blending timeless style with cutting-edge performance,” Aiken concludes. “With the right apparel, you move seamlessly from vigorous activity to quiet moments of wonder, insulated against the chill but connected deeply to the frosty magic that surrounds you. Winter in Norway is unforgettable — and having the right gear ensures you experience its beauty with ease and comfort.”
